On the windswept island of Amrum, in the final weeks of World War II, twelve-year-old Nanning struggles to keep his family together as the world around them collapses. His mother, who has just given birth, is starving and deeply depressed after Hitler’s fall, while his father is away at the front. When his mother’s only wish is white bread with butter and honey – unattainable luxuries in the war’s final days – Nanning embarks on an adventurous quest. The journey forces him to confront his family’s dark legacy.
Read moreDirector Fatih Akin, known for films such as Head-On (2004), In the Fade (2017), and The Golden Glove (2019), creates a quiet and beautiful portrait of childhood in the shadow of a distorted adult worldview. Nature provides a majestic backdrop where questions of guilt and innocence collide.
Jasper Billerbeck makes a striking debut as the young boy trying to understand both his family and his own place in the world. With strong performances, evocative cinematography, and complex moral dilemmas, Amrum becomes a film about how hope and kindness can grow in a place overshadowed by a dark past.
