Suffering from Alzheimer’s, Yuriko’s memories are gradually disappearing, and her son Izumi and his pregnant wife Kaori have to deal with this challenging situation. Though she can still recognise them, it is a question of how long this will last. As Yuriko's memories fade, Izumi unravels more and more of her unknown past.
With the use of original and clever effects, the film depicts Yuriko's fragmented perception of reality, where time, space and memories meander together. Veteran actress Mieko Harada gives a sparkling and empathetic performance in the lead role.
Director Genki Kawamura is best known as a producer of several of Japan's leading anime successes in recent years, such as Your Name (2016), Weathering With You (2019) and Belle (2021). A Hundred Flowers is his debut feature film as a director, and is based on his own novel.
