Samia grows up in Mogadishu, Somalia. Early on, she discovers her talent and passion for running. War rages in the country, and the fundamentalist group al-Shabaab is gaining strength. But Samia wants just one thing: to run.
About the film
Samia, a young girl from Mogadishu, Somalia, has a passion—she loves to run! From an early age, she races through the streets of Mogadishu, despite the fact that the country’s fundamentalist regime forbids women from running. Her talent is recognized, and in the 2008 Olympics she competes in the 200-meter race for her country—wearing borrowed shoes. This brings her international attention and makes her a symbol of women's struggle for the freedom to control their own lives and dreams.
Upon returning to Somalia, the threats from the fundamentalist group al-Shabaab grow increasingly serious. They are angered by her defiance of their bans on women—and by the fact that she is celebrated worldwide for it. Samia sets out on a journey to pursue her dream of running. It becomes a fateful one.
The film is based on the true story of Samia Yusuf Omar and inspired by Giuseppe Catozzella’s critically acclaimed novel Don’t Tell Me You’re Afraid.
