The Last Resort follows Louise, Mikkel, and their two daughters as they vacation at what seems to be an idyllic holiday resort in Southern Europe. But behind the postcard-perfect façade, overcrowded rubber boats carrying desperate refugees keep arriving on the small island.
Their all-inclusive bubble bursts when the family accidentally hits an Afghan man with their car. Later, the stranger turns up at their hotel asking for help. Louise and Mikkel believe it is the right thing to do, but their good intentions soon lead to unforeseen and increasingly serious consequences.
Following the deeply moving and personal film Hope (2019), Norwegian director Maria Sødahl returns with another powerful feature. She poses questions that resonate strongly with our times: What does it mean to be a good person? How far should we go when helping others begins to cost us something ourselves? The film explores themes such as xenophobia and Scandinavian self-perception without resorting to moralizing.
The contrast between the polished surface of the holiday paradise and the chaos of the refugee crisis gives the film a powerful emotional charge. The Last Resort is an intense and unsettling drama—thrilling like a suspense film, but above all deeply thought-provoking.
