About the film
A touching and intimate story about an orchestra that became war refugees overnight. Fifteen musicians from the “Kyiv Soloists” orchestra set out on what was meant to be a short tour in Italy in February 2022. That same night, Russia invades their homeland. Amid the chaos that follows, they decide to extend the tour across Europe, until the Arctic Philharmonic offers them housing and work in Bodø, Norway.
Though the pause is a welcome relief, it is still temporary. The musicians must navigate a new life in limbo, as refugees. How can they make choices about the future when the horrors of war cast a shadow over everything?
Director Trond Kvig Andreassen (known for Mr. Good: The Enigma of Eirik Jensen and Riv i hjertet – A Film about Sondre Justad) offers a unique and intimate look into an orchestra on the verge of falling apart. The result is a moving documentary that reaches deep into the audience and prompts reflection on what choices we might make in the same situation.
The Soloists won the top prize at the 2025 Human International Film Festival, with the jury stating:
“A powerful film about endurance and finding new possibilities together in times of pressure. With its honesty and willingness to let us into a world of both despair and human warmth, the film moved us deeply. Music becomes the glue and catalyst driving both the people we meet and the story forward. With stunning cinematography, the film offers an immersive portrayal of the human cost of war.”
The film had its world premiere in the main documentary competition at the Göteborg Film Festival and was also screened at Kosmorama in March.
