Mandagsfilmen 8. July is En kvinne i Istanbul
The transgender woman Tekla ran away from her family in Georgia to Istanbul – and disappeared.
Now, her aunt, the retired teacher Lea, has decided to find her. She is joined by the young neighbor boy Achi, who claims to have Tekla's address and can help with the search.
Together, they travel to Istanbul - a bustling and colorful metropolis where anything can happen. But how do you find someone who doesn’t want to be found in a city of 15 million people?
When they meet the lawyer Evrim, they receive help in their search. Evrim fights for the rights of transgender people and sex workers, and through encounters with this community, they get closer to finding Tekla.
En kvinne i Istanbul (A Woman in Istanbul) is an energetic and touching drama filled with humor and warmth – and characters you will grow fond of. It starts as a story of two people from different generations who reluctantly get to know each other. But through various encounters, the film becomes a rich portrayal of street life in modern-day Istanbul – where human destinies constantly intersect, and small acts of kindness can have great significance.
The Swedish-Georgian director Levan Akin's previous film was the award-winning I morgen danser vi (And Then We Danced), set in Tbilisi, Georgia. In his new film, he takes you on an authentic journey through Istanbul with an unlikely pair at the center. "I wanted to make a film that fosters greater understanding between generations," says the director. The result is an exceptionally warm film about those who fall outside society – and the chance to right past wrongs.
