Oscar-nominated Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas invites you to the most awkward and hilarious family gathering of the Christmas season.

In Welcome to the Family, she plays Elisabeth, a psychologist who lives with her boyfriend, Espen. This Christmas, Elisabeth will finally get to meet Espen’s family in his hometown of Kristiansand. Having had a somewhat troubled family background herself, she hopes her potential in-laws will be warm and affectionate. But the Dvergsnes family is anything but. They seem capable only of making small talk about practical matters, and they avoid any topic involving emotions at all costs. On Christmas Eve, the family’s grandmother begins behaving strangely. And when no one is willing to talk about it or do anything about it, Elisabeth begins to wonder who she is really with.

The film is directed by Even Hafnor and is based on his own Gullstol-winning short film Small Talk. The short film has also been performed annually as a stage play in his hometown of Kristiansand. Apart from Lilleaas, the cast consists entirely of amateur actors, including Hafnor’s own parents.
