On Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, 23-year-old Bill has fathered two young children with different mothers, lives at his grandmother's house and is on the lookout for opportunities so he can try to make something of himself. 12-year-old Matho can’t really wait to become a man, looks up to his abusive, doped up father and makes foolish life choices that inevitably lead him down wrong and dangerous paths.

With an honest and affectionate observation, debutant directors Gina Gammell and Riley Keough weave these stories together into a fresh, dramatic and humorous film mix. Keough also happens to be the granddaughter of Elvis Presley.

This film is a culmination of many years of work, with the script being co-written by the directors with Franklin Sioux Bob and Bill Reddy, both of whom come from indigenous backgrounds. They also met with hundreds of people on the reserve in order to ensure a realistic portrayal. War Pony has therefore become a film with an everyday feel that comes across as genuine and engaging. It came away from its world premiere in Cannes 2022 with the Caméra d'Or award for best debut feature.
