An elderly couple lives in an apartment in Paris, filled to the brim with books, photographs and everything you’d expect from a couple in their twilight years. The man (played by Dario Argento) is writing a book with analogies of cinema and dreams, while his wife (Françoise Lebrun) is severely affected by advanced dementia.

The film is shot in split-screen for nearly the entire duration - a striking visual effect by controversial auteur Gaspar Noé, known for his explicit violence and sex scenes in films such as Irreversible (2002), Enter the Void (2009) and Climax (2018).

After he survived his own near-fatal cerebral haemorrhage, Noé was inspired to make a completely different type of film. Vortex stands out from his previous films with its much softer tone, without ever steering away from gut-wrenching, heartbreaking stories.
