Sofia Coppola's wonderful debut film The Virgin Suicides is set in 1975 in a sleepy Michigan suburb. Five sisters, aged 13 to 17, are kept on tight reins by their overprotective and strictly Catholic parents. For the boys in the neighborhood, the sisters are mysterious, attractive, and unattainable. However, the girls yearn for more of the exciting life beyond their home. Boundaries are tested, and conflicts arise. Several years later, the boys reflect on the mysteries and tragedies that occurred back then.
Read moreIt was when Sofia Coppola read Jeffrey Eugenides' novel The Virgin Suicides from 1993 that she, according to her own statement, realized she wanted to become a filmmaker. She envisioned exactly how the book should be turned into a film and wrote the screenplay in 1998. The film quickly went into production and premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 1999.
Sofia Coppola's directorial career got a proper kickstart with this sublime, sensitive, and poetic film. Since then, she has followed up with a series of strong films, including Lost in Translation (2003), Marie Antoinette (2006), and The Beguiled (2017), among the very best.
