Every afternoon at 5pm Andrew gets into his car and drives home from work. While driving, first he calls his mother, who has dementia, and then his wife. Occasionally the film's director David Easteal also gets a lift home with him and their conversations revolve around everything from the trivial to life's big questions.

He captures the routines, trepidations, hopes and dreams of a very ordinary guy. Gradually we get to know Andrew better and his relationship with his wife, his sick mother and his deceased sister.
How can a three-hour documentary film about a man driving home from work be so intriguing? The answer lies in the fact that the film paints a multi-faceted portrait of the life of an average person who we can all relate to. The Plains is simple in form, but infinitely rich in content.
