Set in a Polish village in the late 19th century, the film presents the richest peasant in the village, Maciej, who wants to marry the beautiful young Jagna. However, Jagna is interested in Maciej's son, Antek. Jagna wants to live life on her own terms, causing discontent among the rural population where gossip is rampant, and patriarchal values are deeply rooted.

The film takes us through the four seasons and Jagna's harsh encounter with the village's judgment as more and more inhabitants turn against her.
