Throughout his long career of award-winning films, Patricio Guzmán has depicted Chile's turbulent history. This time he aims the camera at a series of violent demonstrations that started in Santiago in the autumn of 2019. This screening is a collaboration with Trondheim Filmklubb.
Read moreOn the 25th of October, the streets of Santiago were packed with more than 1.5 million Chileans protesting against increased social inequity. This develops into one of the biggest uprisings in the country's history. At first the demonstrations were non-violent, but when President Piñera deployed the military against the masses, the situation escalated.
My Imaginary Country features a number of female activists, journalists, academics and other witnesses describing their experiences during the protests. Their insightful reflections on what triggered the uprising puts Guzmán on the trail of the spark that set the country ablaze. Interspersed with dramatic close-ups from the demonstrations, the interviews show that the wounds from the coup in 1973 have almost healed.
