The story in Forever Young takes place in the mid-80s, at the entrance exam at one of France's most prestigious acting schools. The young hopefuls have come through the eye of a needle to get here, and will soon be experiencing the full range of life's joys and tragedies. Moving headlong towards adulthood and their imminent professional careers, they learn about the realities of the world, for better or for worse.
Forever Young is a particularly well-acted and refreshing film. The soundtrack is infused with a range of tunes from composers and artists including Bach, Chopin, Vivaldi, Serge Gainsbourg, Janis Joplin and Vladimir Vysotsky.
Director Valeria Bruni Tedeschi has drawn on inspiration from her own studies at Les Amandiers Theatre school in Nanterre, reinforcing the film's authentic and colourful snap shot of the times. However, it is the timeless theme of finding one's place in the world and the challenges it bears that the film deals with. The film was nominated for the Palme d’Or at Cannes last year.
