Factotum is based on the American author Charles Bukowski's novel by the same name. The story revolves around Bukowski's alter ego, Henry Chinaski. He possesses versatile skills but also a strong inclination not to follow conventional standards and rules. His life consists of poorly paid jobs, life on the road, women, gambling addiction, and alcoholism.

This was the first English-language film that Bent Hamer made after his success with the Norwegian comedies Eggs (1995) and Salmer fra kjøkkenet (2003). Matt Dillon delivers a stellar performance as he portrays Bukowski's alter ego. The film's calm pace, in typical Hamer style, allows for visual richness and a subtle tone that is both humorous and serious at the same time.
