The Olympics in Beijing are fast approaching, and a village on the border of the Gobi Desert is set to be transformed into a modern city—meaning that all the stray dogs in the area must be captured and removed. Lang has just returned home after being released from prison and finds a job with the local dog patrol. However, complications arise when he forms a strong bond with a clever black dog. He must now juggle his efforts to make amends with the community for his past mistakes, reconnect with his remaining family, and protect his new, sharp-toothed canine friend from an unfortunate fate.
Chinese veteran filmmaker Guan Hu delivers a film that is simultaneously poetic, moving, and humorous—one that rightfully won the top prize in Un Certain Regard at the Cannes Film Festival. Black Dog is a genre-blending film that elegantly mixes elements of road movies and westerns with slapstick comedy and a classic redemption story. The film also comments on Chinese modernization and societal development. Interestingly, lead actor Eddie Peng reportedly became so fond of his four-legged co-star that he adopted the dog.
