Welcome to a truly unique screening of Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest. We are hosting two screenings at the Kommandantboligen at the Falstad Centre, with a bus departing from Birralee, near the Prinsen cinema.

The film tells the story of Rudolf Höss, the commandant of Auschwitz-Birkenau, and his wife Hedwig, as they attempt to create an idyllic life for themselves and their family in a home just outside the death camp. At Falstad, this award-winning film is placed in a unique and unprecedented context, as it is screened in the very rooms that, 80 years ago, served as the home of the commandants of the Falstad prison camp.

The newly renovated Kommandantboligen was designed and built by Falstad prisoners between 1943 and 1944, under orders from the German camp administration. Since 2020, the house has been part of the peace and human rights center at Ekne.

The film will be shown to small groups at a time, in an intimate and atmospheric, yet also unsettling and powerful setting. Each screening will be accompanied by commentary and discussions led by the center’s researchers and educators.

The ticket also includes cauliflower soup with freshly baked focaccia, as well as coffee/tea, and attendees will have the opportunity to explore the Falstad Centre as part of the experience.

Please note: There is a very limited number of tickets available, so we recommend booking early.

About the Film:

The Zone of Interest is a historical drama from 2023, written and directed by Jonathan Glazer. Loosely based on Martin Amis' 2014 novel, the film focuses on the lives of commandant Rudolf Höss and his wife Hedwig, who live with their family in a home adjacent to the German concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau. It portrays the Nazi genocide from an unusual perspective, featuring a unique storytelling approach and a powerful interplay between sound and imagery, creating a completely new and distinctive representation of the Holocaust.

Christian Friedel stars as Rudolf Höss, while Sandra Hüller portrays Hedwig Höss. The film won the Academy Awards for Best International Feature and Best Sound in 2024. It is also the winner of the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival.
