Monday Film: Ballad of a White Cow

After her husband is executed for murder, Mina tries to build a new life with her seven-year-old daughter. As a widow and single woman in Iran, she quickly finds out how little autonomy she has.

Summoned to a meeting with the judiciary, she receives the shocking news that her husband was not guilty, from which time she sets out on a silent battle for justice against the cynical system that killed him.

Ballad of a White Cow is a low-key drama about guilt, lies and justice which moves along at a calm pace, yet offers plenty of surprises along the way.

Directors Behtash Sanaeeha and Maryam Moghaddam have pulled off a coup here, with the latter delivering an unforgettable acting performance in the role of Mina.
