R.M.N. is a saturated, intricate and perfectly orchestrated drama in which Cristian Mungiu serves up detailed cross-sections of life in a Romanian village in the Transylvanian mountains, thus providing an apt analysis of Europe today.

Matthias works at a slaughterhouse in Germany. At work, he is a shunned guest worker who does not get time off to call home. At home in the Romanian village, the position is turned upside down. Initially, he is apparently rum, but adopted into a respected family. "We managed to get rid of the gypsies," says a friend, without realizing the paradox of who he is saying it to. "But now these blacks come and take over instead." The "blacks" are three migrant workers, hired by the local bakery because young people in the town have left for Western countries where wages are higher.

The title is the Romanian name for MRI, a device that creates images of the body's internal organs. It is precisely such detailed cross-sections that director Christian Mungiu serves up. Not only of the village, but also of Europe today. About the conflict between town and country, east and west, between those who are always heard and those who are never heard. About those who are inside, and those who have to stand outside and knock carefully, hoping that no one will take the request badly.
