Mandagsfilmen: Lillesøster

Fatima is 17 and the younger sister in a warm French-Algerian family. We follow her as she moves out of home and begins university in Paris. She dates, makes friends, and takes her first tentative steps into adulthood. But when Fatima discovers an attraction to women, her sense of loyalty to her beloved Muslim family is challenged. She is confronted with what feels like an impossible dilemma: how can you stay true to yourself when the different parts of your identity don’t seem to fit together?

Lillesøster is a quiet yet powerful coming-of-age drama. Herzi portrays her characters with empathy and resists the temptation to heighten conflict for the sake of drama. Fatima’s story is more about accepting herself than being accepted by others. In that sense, Lillesøster is less a coming-out story and more a story about growing up.
