This is the third feature film of Iranian-born Ali Abbasi. His previous film BORDER (GRENSEN) was a huge success at the Cannes Film Festival in 2018.
HOLY SPIDER competed for the Palme d'Or in the main competition at Cannes 2022. Lead actor Zar Amir Ebrahimi won the award for best actor.

HOLY SPIDER is based on real events from the early 2000s in Iran. A journalist digs deep into the underworld of the holy Iranian city of Mashhad as she investigates a series of murdered sex workers. The murders are committed by the so-called Spider-Killer, who believes that he is cleansing the city of sinners.
