Call Jane

Welcome to this week's Monday film: Preview of the gripping film CALL JANE.

Phyllis Nagy wrote the screenplay for Todd Haynes' CAROL. Now she is making her debut as a film director with CALL JANE. The film shows the oppression of women in the United States in the 60s and 70s, when no one had the right to self-determined abortion. The female-run underground collective Jane took matters into their own hands.

Housewife Joy lives an ordinary life with her husband and daughter in Chicago in 1968. When Joy's pregnancy leads to a life-threatening condition, she is refused an abortion by the male doctors on the hospital board, and is forced to search for alternative solutions. The road leads to the Jane Collective - an underground movement that helps women get abortions. This is a real organization that existed in the United States.

CALL JANE is an energetic film about a serious subject that is still very topical. The film shines with great performances by Elizabeth Banks, Sigourney Weaver and Kate Mara.
