The Harlem Cultural Festival of 1969 has by several people been referred to as "Black Woodstock" as it happened at the same time as the famous Woodstock-festival. The festival celebrated Afro-American music and culture, and promoted Black pride during a time of revolution. Various legendary musicians and important political activists from the Civil Rights Movement in the United Stated were present. Among some of these are names such as Nina Simone, Sly and the Family Stone, Stevie Wonder, Mahalia Jackson, The 5th Dimension, and Gladys Knight & the Pips.
The festival was filmed by Hal Tulchin, but the material has never been shown before it was all collected for this documentary by musican Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson. This is his directorial debut and the movie has been critically acclaimed and won several prizes - one of which is the Oscar for Best Documentary.
We welcome you to an evening filled with music and atmosphere in beautiful Vår Frue kirke!
The movie is rated PG-12.
