In Woodpeckers, filmed on location in the Dominican Republic, we meet Julian who has been imprisoned. Normally this no ideal situation, but for Julian it is one of the best things that has ever happened to him. The Jail in which he is imprisoned overlooks a female prison and through a self-composed sign language called woodpecking, it becomes possible get to know the women on the other side of the wall. Julian falls in love. Did we mention that the film is based on real events? Not only that, but the movie is recorded in a real jail and all but the largest of roles are played by actual prisoners and wardens. All this helps to render the film a rare authenticity, without compromising on the fast pace of this exciting prison drama. Woodpeckers is the Dominican Republic's official Oscar candidate.
