The Traitor is based on the real-life events of Tommaso Buscetta, the first Sicilian mafia boss who became an informant.
War breaks out between the Sicilian mafia bosses, and Buscetta runs away to Brazil to avoid the violent conflict. Back in Italy, his allies are killed one by one. Arrested by the Brazilian police and delivered to Italy, he suddenly finds himself in a situation that’ll change the history of the Italian mafia as he starts telling the truth.
Pierfracesco Favino makes an impressive role interpretation as the complex Buscetta who acts against his own code of honour. Buscetta was used as the primary witness by the police and exposed the mafia’s criminal hierarchy in a series of dramatic testimonies, his statements leading to the arrestation of over 400 members of the mob. The film is nominated to several international awards, among them the Palm d’Or, the highest prize awarded at the Cannes Film Festival. It was also Italy’s contribution to the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film.
