Minding the Gap is not a movie about skateboarding, but for the people we meet in this award-winning documentary, skating is a vital escape from reality. This moving documentary shows us the harsh reality of growing up under difficult conditions. Director Bing Liu has been skating all his life in the post-industrial city of Rockford, Illinois. Bing filmed his two friends Zack and Keire for a period of 12 years. Combined with recent interviews and an inevitable personal involvement, the result is a beautiful and deep dive into the lives of this group of friends. We see them grow up in front of the camera and get a personal and emotional perception of their lives while also exploring questions related to masculinity, neglect, and forgiveness. Bing is a new, sharp voice in the documentary world that we look forward to seeing more of. The film has won numerous awards, including a Satellite award and a National Society of Film Critics Award for Best Documentary.
