An Elephant Sitting Still is a dark tale of a fateful day that leads four protagonists together to face an elephant, which is allegedly completely motionless and apathetic. Among them is 16-year-old Bu, who made a big mistake by pushing bully Shuai down a staircase and thus inflicting life-threatening injuries on him. Bu’s classmate Li had to flee after she was misled into having an affair with a teacher. Shuai’s older brother Cheng feels responsible for the suicide of a friend, and Mr. Wang, Bu’s 60-year-old neighbour, is about to be sent to a retirement home by his son. This unforgettable and highly melancholy film has been hailed as «the greatest recent film»by The New Yorker. Nearly four hours long An Elephant Sitting Still, is the first and unfortunately the last feature film by director Hu Bo, who committed suicide before the film premiered.
