Rodrigo Santoro (known from Westworld and Love Actually, to name a few) plays the main character Malin in this poignant movie. Malin teaches Russian literature until he is suddenly removed from work and told to act as an interpreter between doctors and Chernobyl victims sent from the Soviet Union to Cuba. His working day largely consists of informing parents that their children will never fully recover, and the atrocities are so immersive that it becomes difficult for Malin to be sufficiently present in his own life.
A Translator shows us an unknown part of Cuba’s history from the late 1980s. The film’s story is based on the life of the father of the two directors, Rodrigo and Sebastián Barriuso.
