This excellent thriller takes on the topic of what it means to be a mother or to be biologically related to someone. Malena is a doctor from Buenos Aires that turns to surrogacy to become a mother. We meet her on the way to an illegal clinic somewhere in the countryside that offers surrogacy. The film is engaging from the start: Long shots close to the actor makes us feel Malena’s vulnerability and despair. A Sort of Family uncovers a corrupt and morally degraded system, and treats these complex matters in a way that appeals to both eyes, heart and head.
