In 3 faces we are introduced to a young girl from a small mountain village who dreams of becoming an actress but is hindered by her family. She makes a desperate video message threatening to commit suicide, and sends it to the famous actor Behnaz Jafari. Shocked and worried, Jafari decides to travel to the village the young girl lives in, along with a friend who is a filmmaker. In the small village they encounter a closed society locked in their own time dimension. She then hears about a mysterious third female actor who has moved to the village to live in isolation.
The film addresses women’s rights with subtle metaphors and a distinctive film language. 3 faces competed for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2018 and won the festival’s award for best manuscript. This is the fourth film director Jafar Panahi has made after being imposed a 20-year ban on filmmaking by the Iranian authorities. He also plays the role of the filmmaker in 3 faces.
