Director Laurent Cantet, who has won the Gold Palm for The Class (2008), has presented us with an authentic portrait of youths in a France characterized by social unrest. Author Olivia holds a writing course for a diverse group of youngsters, the aim being to jointly compose a thriller. Through discussions on what the thriller should contain, the youths increasingly reveal more about themselves and their background. Antonie distinguishes himself at an early stage in the group and catches everyone's eye with a rough depiction of a shooting where he shows a little too much sympathy for the killer. Soon, Olivia becomes fascinated by Antonie, despite - or perhaps because of - his violent and racist tendencies. The Workshop deals with current topics such as social class, terrorism and right-wing extremism, and explores the boundaries of expression in a tense political climate.
