Director Zaynê Akyol grew up in Canada but was born in Turkey of Kurdish origin. The same is Gulîstan, a woman whom Akyol regards highly, but who suddenly travels to Turkey and Iraq to join the Kurdish guerrilla. She never returns, and Akyol decides several years later to retrace her footsteps. When Akyol arrives in Iraq, ISIS attack, which completely changes the theme of the film. Akyol meets a group of female soldiers from Kurdistan who are defending Kurdish areas in Iraq and Syria against ISIS. The women belong to the Kurdistan Labour Party (PKK), which has campaigned against Kurdish injustice for 34 years, but is still considered a terrorist organisation by several European countries. Akyol portrays a different picture of the war the women are fighting than the media often does.
