Kim Gang-il, a former paratrooper, works as an excavator operator while trying to forget traumatic memories from his days in the military service. One day while at work, he accidentally digs up a skeleton. The event forces him to face his past life. In 1980 he was part of a troop sent to oppress rebellions, and several protesting students were killed in the confrontations. Later, the pro-democratic rebellions have been celebrated as heroes, while the soldiers are considered murderers. Gang-il is haunted by his past, but wasn’t he simply following order? He gets into his excavator and sets out to find his former superiors. Who gave the order to kill the students? And who were just following order? Excavator is produced and based on a script by legendary Kim Ki-duk (Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring, 2003).
